Baking Soda - The Wonder Cleaner?

When I was growing up I used to think that the only use for baking soda was for baking cookies and making cakes, but to my surprise baking soda has many more versatile uses. It has a myriad of uses in and around any household.  Here a just a few examples and suggestions of ways you can use baking soda around your house.

Toothpaste
Baking soda can be mixed with water and hydrogen peroxide to form a white paste and than used as a toothpaste.  It will clean your teeth well and also freshen breath and whiten teeth as well.

Souring Powder
Have you run out of scouring powder?  Now worries!  Take your baking soda and apply it as you would your scouring powder and clean away the dirt and grime with ease.  Not only will the area you are working on be clean but it also avoids the use of harsh chemicals that can irritate your skin.

Laundry
You can add a use baking soda in your laundry to freshen your laundry the natural way.  Add 1/2 cup of baking soda into washer when adding detergent  Laundry is nice and fresh with this natural additive.

Oven Cleaner
Sprinkle baking soda in warm oven.  Spritz the oven down with some water and allow it to sit for about 45 minutes.  Wipe out just like any other oven cleaner.  Repeat as needed.   Your oven comes out nice and clean without any chemicals to smell or to irritate your skin.

Carpet Freshener
Anyone who has pets can appreciate this one.  Sprinkle some baking soda on your carpet and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes.  Vacuum up the baking soda and the smell will be gone.

Refrigerator Deodorizer
The refrigerator can be a common place for some strong odors.  No one wants to open up the fridge to be greeted by the smell of onions or last nights dinner.  To help eliminate the odors place an open container of baking soda on the shelf and let it do its magic by absorbing the odors.

Deodorant
Mix 4 tablespoons of baking soda with enough essential oil like lavender or maybe sandalwood to create a thick paste.  Brush under your arms in the morning to stay fresh.  Can be reapplied through out the day as needed.

Baking soda just has so many different uses in and around the home.  It is less expensive than some other cleaners and can be used in so many more ways.  So the next time you have some cleaning to do take a trip to your pantry and see what baking soda can do for you.  It may just surprise you!

  1. Once a week I mix baking soda, salt and foaming facial cleanser to cleanse my face and neck. It exfoliates and smooths at the same time. My grandmother's been using that as her cleansing routine forever, so I was exposed to that at a young age. It makes your skin feel great. I gotta try that deodorant idea!
